30 Apr 2011 I just bought a new 45-70 Guide Gun the other day and today while shopping at Three Bears in Palmer,on a whim, I picked up a 250 rd box of HSM 405 40.2 gr with the 405gr bullet crono's 1807fps in my marlin. my cast bullets ( northern star cast bullets) for hunting generally wear a gas check. good luck!
Even with a good roll crimp it left so much residue/unburned powder behind it was tough to chamber rounds in a Marlin levergun. They may have changed . My Marlin Guide Gun is the most accurate with H4198 and Speer 400 grain jacketed flat points. For lite loads I like Reloader 7, and for really lite loads I like Unique.
17 Feb 2013 I think of you can handle that, you will have no problems with the Marlin. I don't have the "guide gun" but I have the cowboy which some folks say is harder to handle. Now I load it pretty mild with a 400 grains speer at @ 1450 FPS and it's not bad at all.

Do you have a dangerous game hunt in the works? What do you plan to hunt? Or if you're just doing it for the boom factor, that's fine too. Marlin 1895's are very strong. I have a friend that has fed his 45/70 Guide Gun a steady diet of Buffalo Bore and Garrett heavy hitters for years with no impact on the rifle.
20 Jan 2015 I have a marlin guide gun 18" barrel. Looking for good data and bullet weights that other people have had good luck with. Only hunting deer so don't need any knock my socks off loads. But don't want light trapdoor loads either. Probably a good midrange load. 98 220 swift is offline
